For months, the scheme was being perfected within the Ministry of Sports in the state with private sector experts and numerous partners for effective collaboration.
On Monday, January 9, the first stage of the scheme came to the fore with a selection exercise in Aba, Aba South Local Council headquarters of the state.
The scheme known as Abia State Grassroots Sports Development Initiative (ABGRASOD) is aimed at fishing out the first set of young Abians between 11 and 15 years to begin serious!grooming that may lead them to stardom in various events including football, athletics, tennis, etc.
The initial trial of the scheme kick-started on Monday, January 9, 2017, with Aba South Local Council with over 230 children within the ages of 11 and 15 in attendance.
An official of the private partners on ground said the aim of the trials was to select 60 children from each local council to make the 1020 needed for the pilot scheme. They would be nurtured and developed with the help of international strategic partners to the lead partners, Praik-Applied.
The trial is scheduled to hold in the 17 local council headquarters of Abia State from January 9 to 27, 2017.
The source said ABGRASOD was a private-sector funded anddriven collaborative project of Abia State government through the Ministry of Sports and Praik-Applied Nigeria.
